do the buttons go in the front or back???

So on the weekends J gets to do the honor of dressing Maya while I am fast asleep after working all night. I like to think I am pretty organized and have her outfits already folded together in her drawers so all you have to do is grab-n-go. It is always fun and interesting to see what J picks for her to wear. He totally disregards the pre-picked outfits and comes up with something he designs himself.  The other day when he brought Maya in to have her afternoon nursing session, in my dazed sleepy consciousness I noticed something pretty comical...she was rockin' her shirt on backwards! He even had the snaps un-snapped and she was making a pretty serious fashion statement! When I told him he had it on backwards he replied, "oh really? I thought it looked really cute like this..."

so then fast-forward a few weeks....

I woke up to find her dressed like this...and just giggled. I guess it isn't always that straight-forward as to when the buttons go in the back! She had yet another shirt on backwards! :) I was teasing J and whispered to Maya that she had her shirt on backwards but that I wouldn't tell anyone and J immediately said, "I thought you said the buttons go in the back??" I know, confusing right??? I just told him to look for the tag from now on and that should always go in the back! :) She obviously doesn't know the difference and was happy regardless which way she was wearing her shirt!

I have been debating lately if we are ready to sell back this swing since we are using it less and less and seem to be gaining more and more. But J is a little reluctant to let it go yet, he says it is just nice to have a myriad of things she likes...so for now it stays. She has been doing this thing for awhile now where she will grab a hold of the toy bar right when she is starting to fall asleep. It is pretty adorable.

first bites

June 10th, 2010
Maya tasted her first bites of oatmeal flakes mixed with breast milk! My plan was to exclusively nurse her until she was 6 months old, but she has been showing readiness for the past few weeks already! The other day I was eating yogurt and she literally watched me spoon out each bite from the yogurt cup to my mouth! She also started reaching for our food when we have her on our lap during dinner time. So, I figured we could give it a try and see what happens! Well, we should've known that she was going to love it because she is all about anything that goes into her mouth! Again, I shot some video with my phone, and again it is sideways....sorry if it makes you cross-eyed watching it! My phone can only record for one minute intervals, so I have two videos to share. I have to say that I sound pretty silly and my baby talk is hilarious! :)

P.S. I am not sure why I felt the need to wipe her mouth off between each.and.every.bite, but I learned my lesson and have since just let her enjoy her full serving before we clean her up! :)

It was almost like she knew she was going to get a special treat or something...as soon as I put the bib on her she was all smiles! She was so smart and such a natural. She knew exactly what  to do and wanted more and more and more! She would kick her little legs between bites and open her mouth up really really wide to let me know she was ready for the next bite.

I have to say that I am pretty good at this picture-taking, filming and feeding all at the same time!

a swinging we will go

June 2nd, 2010

We were on our daily walk and found ourselves wandering through Koret Children's playground. I spotted a trusty old bucket swing and decided we should give it a whirl! Maya looked so tiny in it, but we just draped her arms over the front and gave her a little push and she LOVED it! I had my phone along so I captured some video of her giggling. The best giggles are at the very beginning of the clip...don't mind me and the sound effects it took to get her to giggle! :) Unfortunately I didn't realize that I can't turn the video to be vertical the way I shot it, so sorry for it being sideways!

I was initially bummed that I didn't have my big camera with me for this outing, but look at the awesome pictures my phone took! :) Not too bad!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We are pleased to announce that she is sleeping without her swaddle! Well...sometimes. I found her like this the other morning just sound asleep so I couldn't help myself...love how she has both arms outstretched like an airplane. The swimming instructor in me thinks she is going to be a great swimmer remember the "chicken, airplane, glide" sequence we were taught as kids to do for our arms when swimming on our backs? She is still sleeping in our room in her pack-n-play. We are just a little hesitant to put her in her crib when she hasn't mastered rolling over and back yet.

On our way home from our play date with little H we discovered this shop.....we didn't stop this time, but next time we may need to try it out!

the baby vs. the maya

Day two: J's first day back to work=shopping day for the girls!
It was an interesting trip for Grammy and Josie this time around. They only had one day with both J and I together and the remainder of their time they either spent with just Maya and I or Jason and Maya with little sprinkles of Kyle and Brandy in between. My agenda for the girls included taking them to my favorite thrift shop just down the road. Josie asked if she could "wear Maya" in the bjorn and I happily obliged. I can't really explain how it feels when your family shows affection to your baby, but it sure does feel good! It was exciting to watch them sift through mountains full of garments, and even bring me a few things that they thought I may like to try or "this looks like you." I forget how fun it is to have a fellow girl's opinion about what attire looks best!

can you even take maya seriously in this picture????

After some shopping we embarked on a trip downtown to meet up with Kyle for some thai food. It was my first time taking Maya in the stroller/car seat combo on the MUNI to go downtown. I knew it was going to be a long afternoon and my one shoulder can only handle so much baby-wearing after it is worn.out. Maya was a little trooper for the most part! She slept all the way there and even through us ordering our food and then wouldn't you believe that as soon as the plates were placed in front of us she decided she was hungry too! Grammy said that babies just have a way of knowing these things and it is inevitable that they become hungry right when you food is warm and ready to eat!
After our yummy thai food our next stop was Chinatown. Grammy and Josie always look forward to their yearly boba drink, the one with the tapioca balls at the bottom. Kyle had mentioned wanting to take Grammy to this four-story fabric store that is downtown, but by the time we made it to chinatown and back it was already 6 pm and I knew Maya was going to be ready to call it a day! So we left Josie with Kyle and headed back home
Friday...Day three
The beginning of my work week. Grammy, Maya and I braved another trip downtown to go to that fabric store Kyle was talking about the day before. It was AMAZING! If I knew how to sew I am sure I would've been in heaven! Grammy found a nice little button-up jacket for me at the thrift store, but it was missing a few buttons, so we scored some sweet buttons at Britex! And she even sewed them on for me, by hand! :)

At the store we happened to run into another little baby that was a month older than Maya. We thought it would be fun and interesting to see the babies interact with each other. Let me just say that Maya was DETERMINED to eat this other baby! And sadly, in the end Maya ended up scratching the other baby's face, it didn't draw blood, but it sure was raw and red and the baby instantly started crying. I felt so guilty. I really really needed to cut Maya's fingernails and she ended up making this other baby cry!

After that we were on our way home to cut her little fingernails! I got to take about an hour long nap while Grammy took Maya in the Bjorn to The DeYoung Museum. When Grammy and Maya got back from their short excursion Grammy exclaimed, "I think Maya is going to be an ARTIST! She was looking at everything in the museum!"

The rest of my weekend was spent working while J entertained Grammy, Josie and Kyle. He took them back up to Sonoma to the Jacuzzi Winery to do some wine tasting (where we took my dad). Grammy flew back to Iowa early Sunday morning and Josie stayed in San Fran until Wednesday. Luckily J had Monday off for Memorial Day so he got an extra day to spend with Josie and Maya. They took a stroll through the Haight-Ashbury area and she spent another night at Kyle and Brandy's place. She spent her last full day with Kyle and Brandy and for her last evening we rented a chick flick! As always the time always flies by so quickly. We will be seeing them again shortly as they have a road-trip planned in July with Janet, a family-friend.

the beautiful SF botanical garden

May 26th, 2010

After we got home from the ceremony we all had a little lunch and then adventured to one of our favorite spots...the SF Botanical Garden. We only live like 10 blocks away, so away we went. It has been really amazing to see all of the new growth over the past few months. We started walking here after Maya was born and now 4 months later it seems so much more lush! We are excited to see what everything looks like in the next coming months!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On our way back home our sweet neighbor Maya, (yeah she shares the same name as our little bundle) volunteered to take a few family pics for us! If I remember correctly she has lived in our same apartment building for going on at least 20 years! A true native San Franciscan with the same name as little Maya! :)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Whew! What a long eventful day we had! From J's graduation, to a walk in the botanical garden, so snuggling up on the couch and catching up! Maya was so much fun to watch, I guess J and I are so used to it only being us that we forget that Josie and Grammy are "new" to her. She was always leaning back to look at whoever was holding her....pretty precious.

J's Big Graduation Day

May 26th, 2010

Even though J graduated in December, he chose to still go ahead and walk in May, so it would feel "official." With him starting back to work literally the very next day we warned our families that if they came out for the graduation, our time with them would be limited. At the very last minute Sherrie and Josie made the trip out! The landed at SFO airport at 10:50 am and the Graduation Ceremony started at 11:00 am! Maya and I decided to just take the MUNI (subway/bus) downtown since it was being held in the famous Civic Center and parking would have been a nightmare. She did really really well during the 2.5 hour ceremony! I inevitably had to nurse her once but, we have got the whole disguised nursing in public thing down pat now! Grammy and Josie met up with us mid-ceremony to proudly watch J receive his well-deserved diploma. We were assuming he would be at the end since our name ends with an S, but to our surprise he was all of a sudden walking across that stage! We were all shocked, so our cheering was a little delayed. Afterwards we got the opportunity to meet Vaughn's family (J's best friend). We have heard so many great things about his family it was awesome to get to finally meet them in person! And let me just say that they have some serious height in their family! Jason is almost 6 feet tall and most of them still tower over him!

so.so.happy

As we were all leaving the Civic Center, you could tell that J and Vaughn were so proud, because they marched right on outside in their caps and gowns! We literally got across the street when J finally decided to take them off! But, it made for some really awesome pictures so I was pleased.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After the ceremony we were headed back to our apartment, but along the way we briefly walked through the downtown farmer's market. We could smell the sweetness of the kettle corn in the air, so we had to stop and buy some to take back home with us! Grammy was getting a phone call from Kyle and trying to show J how to answer her blackberry....can you tell J was ready to go home! He didn't want Maya to have a melt-down in the process of going home since we were going to be taking the MUNI. Before long we were on the subway heading back to our apartment. I couldn't help but take a few pics of Maya sitting on J's lap just looking and examining Grammy's face! It was so adorable! She is just becoming more and more aware....she has to inspect and examine those around her now! And of course she caught a glimpse of her mommy from afar!

What a whirlwind start to Grammy and Josie's visit! more first day pics to follow....
